John is an adventure, advertising and portrait photographer whom couples a lifelong love of the medium with a passion for storytelling.
I discovered my love of this medium while studying in New York, a skill that I nurtured throughout university, and a practice I continued within the Arctic, Europe, as well as North, Central and South America, the Middle East and Australasia while serving with the Royal Navy.
Since then I’ve been fortunate to continue my creative journey, crafting images with an elemental quality and collaborating with a variety of artists, athletes and explorers, within advertising, editorial and portrait projects in California, the Himalayas, Mongolia, Scotland and more recently, Barbados.
I’m a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a member of the Patagonia Pro Programme, and my images can be seen in a variety of adventure and business based journals and series of brand campaigns. My work has also been twice featured by the prestigious camera manufacturer Hasselblad, and earlier this year my portraiture was shortlisted for the BJP Portrait of Britain Award.
Combining my skillset as a former Navy Diver with photography I travelled to Bridgetown to shoot Stewards of the Sea, an ocean based assignment that illustrates the tireless efforts of the Bajan community as they nobly continue a series of conservation projects.
Earlier in the year, and this time a little further from the sea, I journeyed to the western Mongolia to trace the traditions of the Kazakh community.
The Generations Project was an immersive shoot, where I lived and worked with two Kazakh families to document their lives, convey the characters and unveil the next generation of Eagle hunters and huntresses. Both challenging and rewarding, this project was an experience of a lifetime and an absolute privilege to have this rarefied insight. I hope that the outputs will do these warm and welcoming communities justice.
Since then I continue to shoot a balance of commercial and personal projects that are focused toward advertising, editorial and portraiture.
